1963 Facel Vega Facel III

Last updated on December 29, 2021

Today’s car is a 1963 Facel Vega, Facel III coupe. I saw this car at Silver Spur Breakfast Meeting, which meets the first Saturday of the month and It is owned by Dana Shatts. The original owners of this car were Gavin and Janet Shatts, Dana parents. They originally ordered the car at the 1963 Paris Motor Show while Dana’s father was on assignment for Hughs Aircraft Co. They brought the car home with them after the assignment. The car was later given to Dana when he needed a car for collage. Dana had it restored after 50 years in 2013.

It is powered by Volvo B18, 108.6 cu in, 1.78 liter, in line 4 cylinder, with 2 S.U. carburetors, producing 108 hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Delivering that power to the rear wheels through 4.56 to 1 gear ratio. The brakes are Dunlop disc brakes at all 4 wheels with power brakes. The suspension is independent coil springs in the front and half elliptical in the rear with pneumatic shock absorbers. The original cost of the was $3,625.00. The total number of 1963 Facel Vega Facel III’s produced was 1,100.

The best part about seeing this car and meeting Dana is listening to his stories and seeing the infectious smile on his face. This is a rare car that has been very nicely restored. A great car for car shows, Cars and Coffee, or just cruising around town. Thanks for riding along. Frank
